In the highlands of Xin Man, Ha Giang, Ma Thi Phuong’s life is intricately woven with the rhythm of the mountains and forests. Each day, she and her husband tend to their fields, growing corn and rice to sustain their family. But as winter settles in, bringing biting cold and harsh winds, even the simple act of making a fire to cook or stay warm becomes a challenge.
Though the forests around them were filled with firewood, gathering it was backbreaking work. Phuong often rose before dawn, making her way through the misty trails to collect the damp wood. Lighting it was another ordeal entirely—wet firewood smolders stubbornly, and it could take hours just to prepare a single meal. Some days, the fire burnt unevenly, and the food ended up scorched, leaving the family to make do with corn cakes instead.
During these long, difficult days, Phuong often dreamed of a stove that would burn evenly, cook quickly, and spare her the endless trips to the forest for firewood. That dream became a reality when she received an improved stove.
“Before, every time I lit the stove, I was afraid the fire wouldn’t catch, and I would spend the whole day watching it. Now, I can finally relax. This new stove cooks faster and produces less smoke.” - Ma Thi Phuong
